How to support your child's development without comparing them to others.
As parents, it’s understandable that we want our babies/toddlers to reach their developmental milestones within the expected timeframe, but it's important to remember that every child develops at their own pace and comparing them to other children can create unnecessary stress for both you and your child. It’s easier said than done, believe me, I know! My son only started walking at 22 months and I was always comparing him to his peers, which drove me crazy and didn’t help one bit. Here are some tips to help you support your child's development without constantly comparing them to others:
- Instead of comparing your child to others, focus on their individual progress. Celebrate the milestones they've achieved and encourage them to continue to learn and grow at their own pace.
- Create a safe and stimulating environment that encourages exploration and learning. Provide age-appropriate toys and activities that promote physical, cognitive, and social development.
- Let your child take the lead in their own learning and development. Observe their interests and provide opportunities for them to explore and learn in areas they show a natural inclination for.
- Remember that every child develops at their own pace, and progress may be slower in some areas than others. Be patient and supportive, and avoid putting undue pressure on your child to meet specific milestones by specific deadlines.
- If you have concerns about your child's development, talk to their paediatrician. They can offer guidance and support and help you determine if any interventions are necessary.
Remember that your child's development is a journey, and every child's journey is unique. Focus on creating a supportive and stimulating environment for your child, celebrate their achievements, and enjoy the journey together.
Take care!
